France’s exports totalled €52.5bn in March. This compares with €52.013bn in the previous reading.

The March figure was €0.487bn higher than the prior figure. Both values are in euros.

    French Exports Signal Modest Resilience

The slight beat on French exports for March, coming in at €52.5 billion, offers a small piece of good news for the Eurozone. It hints at some resilience in core European economies, which we’ve been watching closely. This data point, while minor, contributes to a narrative of stabilization after the slowdown we saw late last year.

We should consider how this impacts European Central Bank expectations for the coming weeks. Recent Eurozone inflation data for April came in a touch high at 2.6%, and this export number won’t pressure the ECB to accelerate rate cuts. Therefore, derivative positions betting on aggressive easing this summer might need to be trimmed back.

For currency traders, this data provides a small tailwind for the Euro. Given that the VSTOXX volatility index has been hovering near a low of 14, buying call options on the EUR/USD could be a cost-effective way to position for modest upside. This contrasts with the sentiment back in late 2025 when many were expecting a weaker Euro.

However, we must view this against the backdrop of a robust U.S. economy, where the latest jobs report showed a solid gain of over 240,000 positions in April. This strength keeps the Federal Reserve firmly on hold, limiting the potential for a major EUR/USD rally. This suggests a range-bound strategy might be more prudent than betting on a breakout.

Equity Volatility Strategies For European Indices

In the equity space, this steady economic data could support European indices like the CAC 40. With implied volatility low, selling out-of-the-money put spreads on the index could be an attractive strategy. This would be a way to collect premium based on the view that the market will not see a significant downturn in the near term.
